How to Get Rid of Bacterial Vaginosis

In this writeup, you’ll learn how to get rid of bacterial vaginosis and make it stay away for good. I’ve outlined  3 antibiotic options and 5 homemade/natural options for treating the infection.

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is a very common condition among childbearing women. It is caused by the overgrowth of harmful bacteria in the vagina. It is more common in pregnant women because of increased discharge during pregnancy which causes a reduction of acidity in the vaginal area. Common symptoms of bacterial vaginosis are;

• Strong fishy smell.
• Grayish vaginal discharge.
• Itching and light vaginal bleeding.

But most of these symptoms fail to manifest in over 85% of women with BV.
If left untreated, BV can lead to very serious conditions like preterm birth, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), increased susceptibility to STD’s and post-surgical infections.

So how do you get rid of BV?
The two main treatments used by BV patients to get rid of BV are:
a) Antibiotics
b) Natural and home remedies.

How to Get Rid of Bacterial Vaginosis Using Antibiotics

This is usually the first course of treatment for women who get BV for the first time. The three main prescriptions drugs used for these purpose are:

• Tinidazole
• Clindamycin

But most of these drugs have adverse side effects like diarrhea, joint pains, nausea and abdominal pains.

Most women who use these drugs to get rid of BV will notice that BV symptoms return within a few weeks. Antibiotics unlike natural treatments kill both the healthy and the harmful bacteria in the vagina. Hence the healthy bacteria like Lactobacilli cannot regenerate fast enough to inhibit the harmful bacteria. Because of this reason, most women who have had repeated BV infections usually opt for natural and home remedies to get rid of BV permanently.

How to Get Rid of Bacterial Vaginosis Using Natural and Home Remedies

Well, if you are in search of an alternative way of how to get rid of Bacterial Vaginosis, this is the best option for you. Most of these remedies have no side effects. Instead of interfering with the balance of microorganisms in the vagina, these treatments work by stopping the growth of harmful bacteria while at the same time wiping out their colonies. These treatments include:

a) Garlic
Due to its strong antibacterial and antifungal properties, garlic has been used for many centuries to treat many diseases besides BV. Garlic is also a natural antiseptic and works from the inside out. Peel the garlic and wrap it in gauze, insert into your vagina and replace every 6 hours. There is also an option of taking garlic capsules (2 capsules a day).

b) Yoghurt
Eat at least 8 ounces of plain yogurt daily. You can buy any flavor you prefer. Yoghurt stabilizes the level of bacteria in your vagina thus leaving you less susceptible to infection. The second option is to soak a tampon in plain yoghurt then insert it into your vagina for 1 hour before removing it. This may seem a little bit strange but it works for most women. Because this procedure is messy you may want to wear a pad. However, this second option of using yoghurt is not recommended for elderly or pregnant women.

c) Hydrogen Peroxide
Make a solution of 50% hydrogen peroxide and 50% distilled water and take it with you into the shower. Pour the solution into a douche bottle and insert the bottle into your vagina. Squeeze the bottle and allow the liquid from the douche to drip slowly. You can later wash away the solution with clean water. Continue to douche with hydrogen peroxide each day for a week. If your discharge continues to smell, you should see a doctor.

d) Acidophilus
If you are allergic to lactose which is found in yoghurt you can take acidophilus capsules instead. Alternatively, you can purchase lactobacillus acidophilus powder and make your own douche. Mix 1 teaspoon of the powder with two cups of lukewarm water. Use this douche at least 7 nights in a row. If you don’t want to douche then you can use Lactobacillus acidophilus gelatin capsules. Insert two of them into your vagina each night before going to sleep. They generally dissolve quickly thus minimizing any form of discomfort that you may experience.

e) Tea Tree Oil
Add a few drops of tea tree oil in your bath and soak for about 20 minutes. You can also try tea tree oil pessaries.

Despite the success rate of natural remedies you still have to adjust your lifestyle so that you can get rid of BV permanently. Some of these lifestyle changes include:

- Avoid engaging in unprotected sex.
- Eat a healthy balanced diet.
- Do not douche with scented or medicated soaps.
- Quite smoking.
- Practice good genital hygiene.

Treating BV takes time, so don’t expect to see results within the first few days of treatment (mainly natural). In conclusion, the best way to get rid of BV effectively is to use natural remedies and to have a healthy change in your lifestyle.
