In this short writeup, I’ll share with you the 10 most effective home remedies for bacterial vaginosis. Despite being a very treatable condition, bacterial vaginosis (BV) recurs in most women within a few weeks or months after treatment. The two main widely used prescription drugs in the market are metronidazole and Clindamycin.
Okay, these drugs do work but why does BV recurs after using them? You see, there are two types of bacteria present in the vagina; the good bacteria (Lactobacilli) and the bad bacteria (like Gardnerella vaginalis). It is the work of the good bacteria to disinfect the vagina by killing the bad bacteria. Antibiotics like metronidazole are not able to differentiate between good bacteria and bad bacteria, so instead of only killing the bad bacteria they kill the good bacteria as well. After treatment, the good bacteria will not be able to multiply fast enough to be able to inhibit the bad bacteria.
So for a more long lasting relief, you can use natural home remedies for treatment of bacterial vaginosis as an alternative to antibiotics. Natural remedies strengthen the good bacteria and also help in fighting off the bad bacteria that cause BV, and they have no side effects.
Home remedies for bacterial vaginosis which you can use include:
Eating yoghurt regularly will help to balance the bacteria that occur naturally within your vagina. You can eat any flavor you like. The second way to use it is to soak a tampon in plain yoghurt then insert it directly into the vagina for 1 hour before removing it. But you should ensure that you are not allergic to dairy products.
2. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar has a natural antibacterial property which helps to fight off the bacteria which cause BV. Add one to two cups of apple cider vinegar in your bath then soak in it for about 20 minutes. This will help create a healthy balance of bacteria in the vagina. This solution will also keep you fresh and eliminate the need to douche using other harmful solutions and scented soaps which is a factor that causes BV in some cases.
Garlic has been used for centuries to fight off many infections and diseases. This is usually because of its strong antifungal properties. Get a fresh pealed clove of garlic and wrap it in gauze, insert into your vagina and replace every 6 hours. There are also garlic pills which you can purchase at the pharmacy.
4. Boric Acid
This is a widely used BV home treatment. Boric acid prevents multiplication of bad bacteria while at the same time destroying their colonies. Boric acid is usually applied through douching. It is important to note that not all women will benefit from this type of douche.
5. Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil can be used for so many other things, but it is a good home remedy for bacterial vaginosis. This oil has natural antibacterial properties which help to kill off the bad bacteria that cause BV. Just add a few drops of tea tree oil in your bath water and have a 20 minute soak in it. Rubbing several drops around the vagina also helps to treat BV.
6. Folic Acid
You can get folic acid pills from your local pharmacy. The normal dosage is 1200mcg (400mcg three times a day for five days). But some labels may come with their own directions and dosages you should take. Folic acid will help to stabilize the PH in your vagina hence bad bacteria will not be able to multiply out of control.
7. Cranberry Juice
We can not talk about home remedies for bacterial vaginosis without mentioning cranberry Juice. Drink adequate amounts of cranberry juice. This juice helps to eliminate bacteria in the body due to its strong acidic content. Women who consume cranberry juice on a regular basis have fewer issues with vaginal bacterial infections. But make sure that the juice is pure cranberry.
8. Acidophilus Powder or Capsules
This is the alternative treatment used if you are allergic to dairy products like yoghurt which contains acidophilus. It is available in most pharmacies and clinics. Like yoghurt, it will also help balance the levels of bacteria in your vagina.
9. Vitamin E Cream
Vitamin E cream makes it into the list of home remedies for bacterial vaginosis. This cream will help relieve the itching and swelling around the vagina if you have BV. However, itching is usually not severe when you have BV. So if the itching or irritation continues then you might have another type of vaginal infection. Vitamin E cream is however expensive and most women cannot afford to use it for prolonged periods.
Probiotic capsules (which contain healthy bacteria) can be partially opened and inserted into the vagina. Follow this home treatment at least once a week. With time, the good bacteria will be able to multiply and grow in numbers restoring the bacterial levels in the vagina back to normal.
Home remedies are natural products with little or no side effects
Most of these home remedies for bacterial vaginosis are natural products with no side effects. Just make sure you use the right remedy which works for you and use it correctly. However, two or more of the above treatments can be used concurrently and still be effective in treating BV.
